XIAP as a Target of New Small Organic Natural Molecules Inducing Human Cancer Cell Death

Herein we wish to report the discovery and chemical/biological characterisation of novel natural small compounds from Piper genus. Furthermore, a deeper insight into their cell death mechanism in human cells provides a proof-of-concept study of their pharmaceutical potential as antagonists of XIAP that may open important insights on XIAP as a suitable turning point for multiple cellular pathways.

In vitro anticancer screening of Colombian plants from Piper genus (Piperaceae)

The present study investigated the in vitro cytotoxic effect of 28 ethanolic extracts, from 16 different Colombian Piper spp. against a panel of three human cancer cell lines. In order to explore the cytotoxic compounds, the chromatographic ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) profile of leaves, flowers and wood for the most active specie are presented. The majority component of the extracts was isolated, identified as an alkenylphenol and showed highly cytotoxicity activity.

The purpose of the current article is to discuss the mechanism of action of bioactive phytochemicals against cancer. The most promising therapeutic targets are presented such as the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP), as well as some bioactive small molecules of pharmacological interest and high specificity against cancer cells.

Antioxidant, Antitubercular and Cytotoxic Activities of Piper imperiale

To our knowledge, only a few investigations have been carried out on Piper imperiale and, as this species is traditionally used by local healers, it is necessary to link chemical compositions to biological effects. This study aims to investigate the total phenol content and the relation of the phenolic composition with antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of P. imperiale.

Anti-tubercular screening of natural products from Colombian plants: 3-methoxynordomesticine, an inhibitor of MurE ligase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

The strategy used in this investigation was to screen the purified natural compounds for growth inhibition against two slow-growing mycobacteria (Mycobacterium bovis BCG and M. tuberculosis H37Rv) and against gut bacteria (Escherichia coli) and mammalian macrophages (RAW264.7), in order to gain an idea of their mycobacterial specificity in whole cell experiments.
